SAEKO starts a serial essay on a Japanese quarterly magazine 『We love 遊』 issued by Fue Katayama, a representative of Cultural Exchange Association MUSA.　

ムーザ文化交流協会代表・片山ふえさんが発行する季刊誌『We love 遊』にSAEKOのエッセイが連載されます。第一回は2008新春/Vol.38号。興味のある方は　fue@plum.ocn.ne.jp まで

As mentioned, SAEKO will stop her music activities for a while. Still, she'll continue her try to unite people, this time by words, not by music. For that, SAEKO applied for the MA degree programme in "English Language and Culture" at Leiden University in the Netherlands. She starts her study in February 2008. On SAEKO'S ROOM(www.saeko.biz/pg_essays.html), you can read her motivation letter that she turned in on application in October 2007, which explains to you what she has tried to express through her music and lyrics so far, and how the same theme leads her to a different path now.

以前発表したようにSAEKOは暫く音楽活動を休止します。最も基本的な表現手段”言葉”で人と人を繋ぐことにしばらく力を注ごうと思うのです。その為、2008年２月よりオランダのライデン大学の修士課程(MA in English Language and Culture)で勉強することにしました。エッセイページ(SAEKO'S ROOM)に、大学出願時に提出したmotivation letter(志望動機書)を英文のみですがアップしました。読んで頂ければ、私が今まで音楽や詩を通して何を表現しようとしてきたか、それがどういう形で次の進路に繋がっているか、理解してもらえるのではないかと思います。

日本を離れようと決めて、早速動き始めました。週末は英会話講師を続けながら（あ、通信添削の在宅ワークもはじめました）、４月９日〜６月９日の２ヶ月間、平日はみっちり集中の日本語講師養成講座に通うことにしたのです。何故、日本語講師って？だって、やっぱり闇雲に日本を出るわけにいかないやん？！２００２年に日本を離れた時はお告げがあったけど、今回は自分の意志で出て行くから何の保証もないし、仕事探しとか、最低限、自分でできる準備をしておこうと思ってね。日本では英会話講師として雇ってもらえたけど、海外で語学講師として採用されるのは母語話者だけだと思ったから、私の母語、日本語講師の免許を取得しようと思ったのです。......(続く)

Soon after I uploaded the last essay, I resumed job-hunting, looking for a job where my past experiences can be used effectively. But my personal history was too unique to be hired in Japan: Japanese society tends to ostracize people different from others. I kept on working as a day laborer -- a cleaning lady and ticket collect collector etc --, while going to job interviews. At interviews, I was often responded with a sneer by executives with no idea about music. Looking over my career, the executives would make fun of me: “Why does a star like you need a job? Is this a true story?" At some point, I decided not to talk about my past career. I told them only my score of TOEIC(English test). Then I got a job! : An English teacher. In October, I started teaching. I also started studying at an interpreting school.

あれから職探しを再開。一般企業の面接は相変わらず落とされまくり、日雇い労働をしながら面接を受け続けました。経歴を活かそうとしたけど、あまりに普通じゃなさ過ぎて？！言えば言う程馬鹿にされ（使い物にならないと笑われる度に自分が凄い駄目人間な気がしたよ…）、経歴を問わず英語力だけで雇ってもらえる職探しに変更。去年１０月にめでたく英会話講師として採用され、通訳学校にも通うことができました。

Sorry for keeping silence for a long time. I've just　uploaded the English translation of my essay which I wrote at the end of last summer. You'll see it in "SAEKO'S ROOM(Essays)". I wrote about my personal situation after finishing LIFE.

How have you been? It’s been long since I finished a serial in a monthly free-paper magazine “METAL-ON-METAL”. Today, I’m gonna talk about my current situation in Japan and music activity in my future.

First, let me get back to the days I’d finished the mastering of LIFE in Hamburg….it was the end of 2005.

Most of my life had been dedicated to “something”. (I’ve written a lot about this “something”, so I don’t explain it here. Anyway, I’d never been able to describe it clear.) Especially after leaving my fiancé behind in 2002, it became all of my life. ‘I wouldn’t regret losing my life if only I could tell this to anybody’, that’s how I’d been feeling.

すみや「METAL ON METAL」の連載コラムをやめてからご無沙汰していましたが、皆さん元気ですか？今年の春に日本へ戻って、私は現在東京に住んでいます。今日は、皆さんに今後の活動についてお伝えしようと思い、久しぶりにエッセイを書いてみました。まず、日本帰国を決めた当時の気持ちから振り返ってみます。

１４歳から思いつめてきた『伝えたかった何か』。それだけが私の生きる理由、いや、それさえ伝えられれば死んでもいいと本気で思っていた。だから、今回のアルバムのリリースで、自分が伝えるべきことを全て書いたと感じられた時、悔いは何一つ無く、『ああ、これでやっと思い残すことなく死ねる』…そう思った。と同時に、何度も死を覚悟していた私には、生きて作品が完成したのは予想外のプレゼントみたいな感じだった。この命で、これまで出来なかったことをしようと思った。
